Travel
Travel – is the movement of people between relatively distant geographical locations with educational, leisure, recreational, business or other purposes.
Up to the 19th century travel was one of the main sources of information about different countries and regions, their history, culture, economy, natural environment, and our planet in general. The Histories of Herodotus and travel records of other historians of antiquity have preserved since the time of Ancient Greece and Rome. A classical example of the travel of the Middle Ages is the exploratory voyage of Parco Polo or Afanasy Nikitin.
A travel for religious purposes in the Middle Ages got the name of pilgrimage. Many pilgrims left records about their faith-based journeys. The Age of Discovery when Christopher Columbus, James Cook and other European explorers intensively explored and mapped the world. Their exploratory travels resulted in the global mapping of the world, establishing trade and cultural links between distant civilizations, and a new worldview.
Latter the discoveries of David Livingstone, Henry Stanley, Nikolai Przhevalsky and other explorers contributed a lot to the development of the geography knowledge. In the 18th century, as the geography became recognized as an academic discipline, exploratory travels got the features of scientific expeditions. In the middle of the 20th century, when the improvements in technology allowed transporting a large number of people to different places in a short space of time, the age of mass tourism has started. Traveling has become a popular global leisure activity.
