On 17 December 2009 a high-speed Sapsan train made its first journey from Moscow to St Petersburg. The train runs at top speed of 250 km/h and the average travel time is 3 hours 45 minutes. Each Sapsan train has 10 carriages (two are first class and eight are second class). From 18 December 2009 Sapsan trains depart from Moscow and St. Petersburg daily at 06:45, 13:00 and 19:00. In future Russian Railways plan to use the same trains in Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow-Sochi directions.
