The Russian Museum was built as the Mikhailovsky Palace by Carlo Rossi in 1819-24 for Grand Duke Mikhail, the younger brother of Alexander I and Nicholas I. Nowadays it is the largest repository of Russian art, providing a comprehensive view of its development.
